Chant Mode and Psalm Tone Extravaganza

with Susan Hellauer of  Anonymous 4

Participants will learn to sing and recognize the medieval plainchant modes BY EAR, and then learn and sing each of the 9 psalm tones. While learning the theory, participants will also learn to create a shapely, word-directed musical line.

This session is for both professional and amateur singers who want to know more about the nuts and bolts of western plainchant, from medieval sources. There will be lots of singing!   -- and all materials, including binder and pencil, will be provided. Some singing experience and sight reading is helpful -- but not really necessary; if you love chant and can carry a tune -- feel free to join in.

Limited to 30 participants.

The  Medieval Plainchant Trope and Prosa
with Susan Hellauer of Anonymous 4

Join Susan Hellauer for an exploration of a forgotten but fascinating repertoire from the Middle Ages. Tropes and Prosas were additions to the standard liturgical plainchant, and were the vehicle for intense musical creativity, until they were almost all banned by the Council of Trent in the mid 16th century.
